How to: Change Your Name on All of Your Social Media Profiles
Since I’m officially changing my last name (so exciting!), I also wanted to make sure I did so across all of my social media channels.
The digital marketer in me wouldn’t allow me to have different handles, but as it turns out, social media handles are much harder to come by in 2017 than they were in 2008.
I finally compromised with a solution I was happy with, and here’s how.
Before we got married
I checked for the handle I wanted across all platforms. I was very lucky that I could grab @nickihicks on everything, but not so lucky to get @nickiong; so I had to be creative with variations of @nicki.ong and @nicki_ong, depending on what the platform would allow.
I used the site Namechk to look for the same social media handle on all the platforms that I use.
Pulling the trigger
I will forewarn you that changing your name on each platform is a pain in the butt. It’s tedious. So make sure you have a big cup of coffee and about an hour to go through each one.
Note: For each of the directions below, I will be giving instructions using my desktop, not a mobile device.
Start by clicking the top right arrow, then “Settings” in the drop-down.
Then, edit both your name and your username by clicking the “edit” button for each. When it comes to usernames, Facebook will be able to tell you which name is available (if you have not already determined yours above). Also, know that you cannot change your name in the following 90 days after making the change.
Changing your name on Twitter is pretty straight forward, while changing your handle/username is a slightly more involved.
Let’s start with the name change. Go to your profile and click “Edit profile” in the top righthand corner.
Now to change your handle or username, click your photo in the top righthand corner, then “Settings and privacy.”
You are now able to change your handle, which will bring over all of your friends and followers. However, know that your old handle will now be available for others to use.
YouTube & Google+
For both YouTube and Google+, you’ll change your name via your Google Account information. You can do this on almost any Google page (including something simple like Google.com).
Log in and click your picture on the top righthand corner, then “My Account.” Click “Personal info & security,” then scroll down to select your name to edit.
To change your username/URL, follow the instructions here to remove your URL, then the instructions to add it.
Instagram is simple, like Facebook. Simply go into your “edit profile” option from your profile page (either on mobile or – now! – on your computer).
Simply edit your name (if you choose) and your handle.
Start by clicking the three dots in the top right hand corner of Pinterest, click “Settings” in the dropdown menu, then “Profile” on the lefthand side.
From here, you can easily change both your name and your Pinterest URL.
LinkedIn is another relatively simple name change process. Start by going to your profile and clicking the pencil icon in the top right area below your picture. Here’s where you’ll change your name for your profile.
Then, to change your custom URL, simply click “Edit public profile & URL” on the right hand side of your profile page. You’ll be able to choose a new custom URL here.
Congratulations! You’ve successfully changed your name and URLs on all of the major social media platforms.
Don’t forget to also change any links from other websites to your social media accounts (e.g. your email signature, other social sites, your own website, etc.).
Happy name changing!
