Why Is It So Hard To Stay Consistent?

It’s well known that, in order to be successful, you don’t have to be the best at any one thing…or the smartest…or even the most knowledgeable.

In order to be successful, the best tool in your tool kit is being consistent.

Consistency is powerful because it’s about taking the same action over and over again to get a desired result. The reality? It’s not so much about the result…it’s actually about the consistent action.

You see, most of us desire a given result or big dream – success in our business, a fit body we feel good in, a happy marriage. But none of those things come without putting in consistent work.

You can’t simply make one sale and be set in your business for life. You can’t do one workout or eat one healthy meal and automatically be fit and strong forever. And you certainly can’ t build a successful lifelong marriage with a single great date or conversation.

Why is so hard to be consistent?

So why is staying consistent so damn hard?

For starters, if you’re anything like me, the beginning of any new habit is exciting…and then it quickly loses its appeal. It’s exciting to start a new any new venture, but that soon wears off when you get to the every day grind of the “middle.”

The middle is the hard part.

And before something has become a full-blown habit, it’s really, really hard to get through the challenging part of being consistent. It’s hard to keep the motivation and drive to take those consistent actions day after day, week after week, month after month.

And why? We become so overwhelmed at the idea of a big goal that we lose sight of the importance of the day to day actions. We become overcome with the idea of being a successful business owner, that we lose sight in the small actions of posting to Instagram every day will get us one step closer to accomplishing our goal.

But more than that, it’s about how the goal helps us align with who we want to be. Once you achieve a goal, you’ll only have another one. The purpose of the goal is the journey; of helping you become the person you want to be. That doesn’t happen without consistent action.

How to become more consistent

So how do we start enjoying the journey more and creating consistent actions to have our dreams come true?

Google “how to become more consistent” and the Internet will overwhelm you with plenty of articles on the subject. So here’s a few ideas to get you started:

Find the fun.

One great way to find more consistency in your behaviors? Find the fun in it!

If you want to get more healthy, why not try out a healthy cooking class that you can take with friends or loved ones? That way you can be social and learn some great tricks and tips for eating healthier!

Or try out a fun Zumba class that gets your body moving all while dancing?

Make it a habit.

Think of a habit you have…something that you don’t have to think twice about in order to do. Wouldn’t it be nice if everything was so easy?

Dr. Rangan Chatterjee has some incredible advice for getting habits to stick: pair them with a habit you already have. His example is how he does a 5-10 minute exercise routine while he makes his morning coffee. Making coffee is a habit and he’s going to do it every single morning, without fail.

Remember it’s not all or nothing.

Many people feel defeated or like they have failed when they miss a consistent step in their plan.

For instance, if you’re working on writing a book and miss a writing day due to family being in town, you could choose to pack it up and quit writing. You missed a day, so what’s the point? Or, you could choose to acknowledge that you were skipping a single day to spend quality time with loved ones and pick right back up the next day, no harm done.

Consistency is important, but it will ebb and flow. It’s impossible to expect that you’ll stay consistent with a task at the same intensity and tenacity every single day for however long you need to. Instead, what’s important is the you keep plugging along, understanding that some days will be better than others and some days will be easier than others.
