Last night I attended the Jacksonville SCORE Chapter\u2019s<\/a> Achieve Your Business Dream<\/a> workshop series on Marketing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The presenters, Mary Habres from Encore Perception Marketing and Elizabeth Pampalone from Jax Computer Chic, spoke to hopeful or brand new entrepreneurs about marketing strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the ladies shared a lot of great information for the newbies, Mary\u2019s presentation, in particular, got me thinking about going back to the basics when it comes to marketing. She reviewed a lot of basic marketing rules of thumb that a lot of us have either forgotten or choose to ignore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So we\u2019re going to take it back a bit to Marketing 101; where all your marketing efforts should truly stem from, whether it\u2019s traditional or online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. What is marketing?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Mary started off with answering a simple question: what is marketing?<\/strong> Marketing, in and of itself, can be complicated and a bit overwhelming. But it can be boiled down to: how your product or service solves the problem(s) of your customer. <\/strong>Share the solution<\/em> with your ideal customer and focus on benefits<\/em>, not features<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Define your business<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In order to understand how your product\/service solves a customer\u2019s problem, you have to do two things: 1) fully understand your product or service and the industry you\u2019re in, and 2) fully understand your customer. So do your research<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Find out:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Who are your competitors?<\/li>
  • Who is your target market?<\/li>
  • Who is your customer?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    It\u2019s important to know your customer\u2026really know <\/em>them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Who are they? (Age? Race? Gender? Other demographics?)<\/li>
    • Where do they spend their time? (Especially online)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
