All of a sudden, social media gave businesses \u2013 and individuals alike \u2013 on a small stage a big voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Enter viral marketing<\/strong>;&nbsp;often simple, yet creative ideas that spread like viruses (hence the name) online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ve seen social media help ideas go viral everywhere, from the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9bZkp7q19f0\">catchy tunes of Psy<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oiGKWoJi5qM\">a magical reunion<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4-94JhLEiN0\">a creative wedding entrance<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.policymic.com\/articles\/11844\/what-is-a-meme-and-what-are-the-50-most-popular-memes-online\">countless memes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>But what makes an image, a video, or an idea go viral?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the case of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KeirsteaDesigns\">Keith Keirstead<\/a>, head of&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.keithkeirstead.com\/\">Keirstead Designs<\/a>, an inspirational response to a tragedy was the perfect recipe for his graphic going viral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally from just outside of Boston \u2013 Worcester, to be exact \u2013 Keith knew both runners and spectators at the 2013 Boston Marathon. After the tragedy he was compelled to create&nbsp;<em>something<\/em>; he\u2019s a designer, afterall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Friday, April 19th \u2013 the day of the Boston lockdown and man hunt \u2013 Keith sat down, created this powerful image, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=10100768688314858&amp;set=a.659968221838.2225397.60700609&amp;type=1&amp;theater\">publicly posted it on Facebook<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img src=\"https:\/\/nickiong.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Boston-Skyline-Footprint-tm.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-162\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Not long after sharing the graphic on Facebook, two of Keith\u2019s friends \u2013 Erin and Sarah \u2013 reached out. The ladies, both friends of two of the wounded&nbsp;(Jeff Bauman and Michele Mahoney), were deeply touched. [<a href=\"http:\/\/origin-www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2013-04-22\/boston-hero-looked-guy-in-the-eyes-before-telling-fbi.html\">Be sure to read the incredible story about Jeff and Michele here<\/a>, and find links to donate to their recovery at the bottom of this post.]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Erin and Sarah suggested teaming up with Keith to use the graphic to print t-shirts up and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.etsy.com\/shop\/keeprunningboston\">sell them on Etsy<\/a>, with all of the profits going to Jeff and Michele\u2019s hospital and rehabilitation bills; Keith agreed immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img src=\"https:\/\/nickiong.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/01\/keep-running-boston.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-163\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2>It\u2019s a beautiful sentiment; but here\u2019s where the real magic happens<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Keith immediately noticed that many of his friends had started sharing his graphic on Friday night, but he had no idea just&nbsp;<em>how<\/em>&nbsp;much attention it would receive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Late on Friday night, Keith left for a weekend at the lake, where he had very little cell service; but was able to glimpse the effect his graphic was having via text updates from friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the time he returned home on Sunday night, Keith found his \u201cKeep Running, Boston\u201d graphic had received&nbsp;<em><strong>over&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em><strong>5,500 shares!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After asking Keith what he attributed this colossal number of shares to, he explained it boiled down to a few key factors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Some fellow rockstars<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sarah and Erin really took the reins when it came to&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.etsy.com\/shop\/keeprunningboston\">the t-shirt sales<\/a>. Between these ladies and their passionate friends, you can almost&nbsp;<em>feel&nbsp;<\/em>the Boston community reaching out to help their neighbors, comrades, and fellow Americans amongst the shares this post received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img src=\"https:\/\/nickiong.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/01\/keep-running-boston-facebook.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-164\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3>Timing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Keith attributes a lot of the \u201cvirality\u201d (and if that\u2019s not a proper word, I\u2019m coining it right now) to timing. While it was never his intention to have it work out this way, Keith\u2019s original post (published at approximately 5:00pm on Friday, April 19th) was in the midst of the citywide Boston man hunt\/lockdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With hundreds of thousands of Bostonians online checking updates of the situation, it was ironic timing to have posted the graphic.&nbsp;According to Keith, as of approximately\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>10:30 pm on Friday (the 19th) night, there were 459 shares<\/li><li>9:30 am on Saturday (the 20th) morning, there were 1,800 shares<\/li><li>Sunday (the 21st) night, there were 5,500 shares<\/li><li>Thursday (the 24th) \u2013 when this post was published \u2013&nbsp;there were&nbsp;<strong>6,155 shares<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img src=\"https:\/\/nickiong.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/01\/keep-running-boston-facebook-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-165\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2>Can you force an idea to go viral?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It seems the answer is a resounding&nbsp;<strong>no<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we\u2019ve often seen, the most unsuspecting ideas end up going viral. All the pieces have the be there: an&nbsp;<strong>interesting idea&nbsp;<\/strong>that will appeal to the masses, the&nbsp;<strong>right audience<\/strong>&nbsp;that will be the catapult to launch your idea into their friend circles, and&nbsp;<strong>perfect timing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You simply cannot force it.&nbsp;<\/strong>Even large companies who strive to create viral campaigns or ads wouldn\u2019t be able to create the likes of the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/OldSpice\">Old Spice man<\/a>&nbsp;on a whim, even with tons of ad spend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>But wait, there\u2019s more<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Going viral is great; but there\u2019s always a message. Whether it\u2019s marketing or, in this case \u2013 the greater good \u2013 going viral is meant to do something\u2026something&nbsp;<em>more<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Going viral will help the victims<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember how&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.etsy.com\/shop\/keeprunningboston\">Keith\u2019s graphic is being sold on Etsy to benefit the victims<\/a>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of Wednesday, April 23rd, just 5 short days after the graphic was released, the team had sold over 280 t-shirts; resulting in&nbsp;<strong>over $3,000 in profits<\/strong>&nbsp;going to the victims. What\u2019s more is this number is only continuing to grow. As of Thursday, April 25th at 8:30 pm, when this post was published, the team has successfully sold over 348 t-shirts!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.etsy.com\/shop\/KeepRunningBoston\">Click here to order your \u201cKeep Running, Boston\u201d t-shirt now!<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Going viral will help Keith professionally<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While the donations and awareness for the victims are obviously the true breadwinners of this story, Keith shared that his professional connections increased substantially thanks to his post. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From freelance opportunities to business connections of all shapes and sizes to \u201cHey, are you related to this Keirstead?\u201d Keith increased the size of his network in a big way thanks to his graphic going viral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<script async=\"\" data-uid=\"9a4e83d7d9\" src=\"https:\/\/nickiong.ck.page\/9a4e83d7d9\/index.js\"><\/script>\n<br>\n\n\n\n<h2>4 Important Takeaways About Going Viral<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I want to \u2013 no, NEED to \u2013 share how incredibly important a story like this is; which is why I felt the need to talk to Keith about his experience. If you gather nothing else from this\u2026take this away:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>1. Timing is key<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to viral marketing \u2013 whether it\u2019s \u201cmarketing\u201d or not \u2013 timing is everything. You can\u2019t force a good viral piece whether you want to or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>2. You can\u2019t (always) control viral<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>More than timing alone, you simply can\u2019t force something to go viral. It\u2019s one of the few natural things left up to us as users of the Interwebs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>3. Choose your medium wisely<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a video, go with YouTube. But if you have an image, where do you go? For Keith, Instagram and Twitter got very little feedback, so Facebook was the clear winner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img src=\"https:\/\/nickiong.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/01\/keep-running-boston-instagram.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-166\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3>4. Most importantly:&nbsp;People can still surprise you<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>People \u2013 and our communities \u2013 can surprise you with their outpouring of warmth, support, and love.&nbsp;It\u2019s heartbreakingly fulfilling to see that; even in the face of tragedy and loss. And while it\u2019s unsuspecting, viral ideas can help us remember that humanity is alive and well.
