When people hear that you have the opportunity to work from home, the first thing many of them think is \u201clucky\u201d or \u201cwow, that\u2019s amazing.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fact is\u2026yes, you are lucky and yes, it is amazing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it\u2019s not all sunshine and rainbows.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It takes a lot of work to have a successful home office or be a telecommuter, especially when you\u2019re working for yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are some of the lessons I\u2019ve learned over the past 3 years working from home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Act like you\u2019re going into the office<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you must<\/em> stay at home in your home office, I\u2019ve found that changing clothes or getting dressed like you\u2019re going to work can do wonders. Staying in your PJ\u2019s, while not very glamourous, may seem like the dream\u2026but I\u2019ve found that it doesn\u2019t allow you to fully get into a \u201cwork mode\u201d for the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To take it a step further, I try to only spend a few hours of the day at home. If you can, try going to a wifi cafe or a coffee house. This way, you have to get dressed for the day, feel more responsible for work you do, and get a little bit of social interaction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Unfortunately, for those who spend a lot of time on the phone, the background noise in these environments doesn\u2019t bode well.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Make a to-do list<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Start every week and every day with a to-do list. Don\u2019t list everything and anything, though. Separate your list: create one section for \u201cmust do\u201d items and another for \u201cideal\u201d items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s been shown that when we create to-do lists with\u00a0too\u00a0<\/em>many long-term goals, we tend to get subconsciously frustrated when we can\u2019t complete the list. Instead, create more short-term goals that need to be completed in order to conquer a long-term goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
