You asked AI to write a blogpost. You hit generate, skimmed it, thought sure, that\u2019s fine<\/em>, and hit publish. Then someone on your team \u2013 or worse, a client \u2013 read it and said, \u201cThis doesn\u2019t really sound like you.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They\u2019re right. It doesn\u2019t. Here\u2019s the thing: your AI process isn\u2019t broken. You\u2019re just skipping the most important step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Problem Isn\u2019t the AI\u2026It\u2019s the Input<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Most business owners sit down with a tool like ChatGPT and type something like: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWrite a blogpost about why small businesses need SEO.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And AI delivers. It gives you something grammatically perfect, logically structured, and completely\u2026flat. It sounds like it was written by someone who read a lot of blogposts but has never actually run a business, worried about a slow month, or celebrated landing a client they\u2019ve been chasing for two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s because it was.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI pulls from patterns. Without direction, it defaults to the most average version of everything \u2013 average tone, average phrasing, average insight. The result reads like a Wikipedia article trying to be friendly. There\u2019s no edge, no point of view, no you<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if your blog sounds like everyone else\u2019s blog, why would anyone stick around to read it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What \u201cAI Voice\u201d Actually Sounds Like<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ve seen it. Sentences that start with \u201cIn today\u2019s fast-paced digital landscape\u2026\u201d or end with \u201c\u2026and that\u2019s why [topic] is more important than ever.\u201d Transitions like \u201cFurthermore\u201d and \u201cIt\u2019s worth noting that.\u201d A three-part structure that hits every expected beat without surprising you once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s not wrong, exactly<\/em>. It\u2019s just forgettable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Readers feel this even when they can\u2019t name it. Something seems off. There\u2019s no warmth, no wit, no sense that an actual person who has opinions and experiences wrote the thing. Google\u2019s getting better at feeling it, too \u2013 and rewarding content that demonstrates real expertise and a distinct voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Fix Is Simpler Than You Think<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You don\u2019t need to ditch AI. You need to use it better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Think of AI as a first draft partner, not a ghostwriter. Your job is to feed it the details that only you know, and then edit the output so it sounds like you actually wrote it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s how that looks in practice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BRIEF IT LIKE YOU\u2019D BRIEF A HUMAN. <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Before you generate anything, write out your angle. What\u2019s the one thing you want readers to take away? What\u2019s a specific story, stat, or example from your own experience that fits? What phrases do you use all the time? What\u2019s your tone \u2013 casual and direct, warm and encouraging? The more context you give, the less generic the output.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WRITE YOUR OWN OPENING LINE. <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

AI almost always botches the hook. Start the post yourself \u2013 even one sentence \u2013 and let AI pick up from there. This sets the tone for everything that follows and keeps the voice from drifting into robot territory right from the start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EDIT OUT THE FILLER PHRASES. <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Go through the draft and cut every sentence that sounds like it belongs in a corporate newsletter. \u201cIt\u2019s important to remember that\u2026\u201d Delete it. \u201cNow more than ever\u2026\u201d Gone. Read it out loud. If you wouldn\u2019t say it in a conversation with a client, it doesn\u2019t belong in your blog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ADD ONE REAL THING. <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

A specific result you\u2019ve seen. A mistake you made. A question a client asked last week. One concrete, true detail does more for trust and readability than three perfectly structured paragraphs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your Blog Should Sound Like You<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At simple sprout, we say this constantly: content that converts is content that connects. And connection requires a real voice \u2013 not a polished, averaged-out version of one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI is a legitimate time-saver. But saving time only matters if the content you\u2019re publishing is actually working for your business. A blogpost that sounds weird or generic isn\u2019t just unhelpful \u2013 it quietly chips away at the credibility you\u2019ve spent years building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
