I’ve always been passionate about using natural and organic products if I can, and skincare is no exception to that.

Here are my favorite go-to products; while some may seem a little unusual, they are all awesome…because they work!!!

That said, I’m no aesthetician, so please consult yours or your doctor for medical advice.

Regular Face Cleansing

1. Oil Cleansing Method (OCM)

We are constantly bombarded with ads and information about how bad oil is for our skin and that we should be stripping it with anti-oil washes and cleansers. In reality, we need to balance the oils in our skin.

I came upon the oil cleansing method over 6 months ago when I discovered it online. The gist is this: you can use a combination of castor and cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil — along with whatever other oil you like — to both cleanse and moisturize your face. This magical mix balances the oil in your skin.

Here are my takeaways from using OCM for 6 months:

  • It could take a while to figure out the perfect recipe for yourself – how much castor vs. olive oil; whether you should use avocado, grapeseed, jojoba, or tea tree oil, or all of them, etc.
  • This mix works perfectly as a moisturizing face wash and makeup remover.
  • Using oil, instead of moisturizer, is fantastic. Just keep it away from your hairline!
  • It ends up being so much cheaper in the long run. The amount you pay for top of the line oil will make up for how much you used to spend on expensive skincare products.

2. Black Soap

I’d never heard of black soap until I came to St. Augustine, but it’s a magical little soap that does wonders for your skin.

Here’s a cool article from TreeHugger on the benefits and some more information about black soap.

Exfoliants

3. Brown Sugar & Honey

By adding just a little bit of brown sugar and honey to your oil concoction (from above), you’ve got the perfect recipe for a super powerful exfoliant!

Make sure you use enough oil though – otherwise, the brown sugar will feel more like sandpaper!

4. Baking Soda & Water

Oh, the power of baking soda.

Add just enough water to make a paste, and you have another great exfoliator. Baking soda will also do a great job in clearing up any blemishes.

Astringent

5. Lemon Juice

Why use nasty chemicals when you can go natural?!

By dotting a little bit of lemon juice with a Q-tip on any blemishes before bed and leaving over night, you’ll notice a huge difference in the morning. The lemon juice kills bacteria and also dries out any blemishes.

Mud Mask

6. Healing Clay

Mud masks are a great, gentle, detoxifying treatment for regular use or for anything going on with your skin: from rosacea to acne.

Internal

7. Fish Oil Pills

Fish oil can do wonders for the skin and your overall health.

If you’re queasy about taking fish oil, my roommate takes the chewable gummies for nearly the same amount of good-for-you fish oil!
