The Good News About Social Media: Keeping Connections Alive

I find that there’s sometimes more negative press on social media than there is on positive.

I could talk all day about how great social media is for business, but I want to take a moment to talk about the power of social media is on a personal level.

Sure, it’s easy to get caught up on how many privacy issues Facebook causes or all of the Twitter scandals that occur when someone tweets something they shouldn’t, but at the end of the day: think about how wonderfully amazing social media truly is.

Keeping connections strong with friends and family

I’m notoriously awful at calling friends and family as often as I should, especially living so far away from so many of them. But then I realized: it’s because we have Facebook. I can feel connected and updated to so many of my friends and family because they post information and photos about their lives, themselves, their pets, and their children.

Furthermore, like many people, I’ve gotten to know my family more – specifically distant family – by being connected on Facebook. It’s a beautiful thing.

Creating space to share

When my grandmother passed away in 2010, my Dad had a great idea. Why not create a space for my family to share memories about her? So we did just that and created a blog as a memorial to her. (RIP Nana!)

Creating new connections

I’ve made countless amazing connections through social media (Twitter, specifically) both personally and professionally. Social media has got to be a powerful tool when you can create friendships and partnerships with people halfway around the world.

Regardless of your thoughts on privacy implications, you can’t argue that social media is equally as powerful and fantastic.
