What Is Your 2014 New Year’s Resolution?
“What is your New Year’s Resolution?”
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been asked, seen, and heard this question over the past week. It’s expected, of course, with the change of the New Year.

I have mixed feelings about New Year’s Resolutions. Last year I wrote about how the New Year could be the perfect time to make a great change in your life…as long as you stick to it.
I still feel that way, but it seems that New Years Resolutions are, if possible, getting even more slack than they were last year.
I spent some time finding a number of different articles on the matter – from reasons not to make a resolution to totally inappropriate (but fun) resolutions, and everywhere in between.

Resolution or goal?
All of these posts and discussions around resolutions got me to thinking (again): is it really worth having one? I keep hearing that your resolutions needs to be attainable (otherwise you’ll get discouraged), that it needs to be specific (otherwise who knows if you accomplished it), and on and on.
Well, you know what? Screw the rules. A resolution is nothing but a glorified goal, right? So why not be ridiculous and vague with your resolutions?!
My goals tend to be vague; they tend to be constant things I’m working toward. For example, one thing that I will always resolve to do: be better tomorrow than I was today.
Is that something that I can ever say I “achieved”? Of course not; but it’s a constant thought in my mind. And if I know that at the dawn of 2015 that I was a better person, friend, daughter, and business person in 2014 than in 2013, then damnit, I’ll count that as a huge win.
That said, it’s fun to have more “attainable” goals. So in 2014, I will:
- Wake up earlier. (Working for myself has meant staying up late and sleeping later than I’d like.)
- Drink more water.
- Be a more honest version of myself – both the good and the bad.
- Keep in touch with friends and family better.
- Grow my business.
