What Will Your Verse Be?
There was a recent commercial that came out, with Robin Williams narrating it.
As it turns out, this powerful piece was originally from the 1989 film, “Dead Poets Society,” where Williams quoted part of Walt Whitman’s “O Me! O Life!”:
The question, O me! so sad, recurring—What good amid these, O me, O life?
Answer.
That you are here—that life exists, and identity;
That the powerful play goes on, and you will contribute a verse.

At the end, Williams asks his students, “What will your verse be?”
It got me thinking to a question I like to ask people: “What do you want?”
It’s a big question; and a hard one to answer.
For many of us, what we want could include: a family, success, lifelong happiness, the ability to help others, and…drumroll, please…make a difference in the world.
For me, personally, I want to make a difference by raising amazing children. I want my children to be my legacy.
Sure, if I save a bunch of people from a burning building or develop the cure to cancer, I will be psyched. But if I do nothing else, I want my verse to be raising incredible babies that then go into the world and make a difference.

Living each and every day thinking what the difference we can make is is a way very few of us live. Starting the day thinking “how can I make a difference today?” should be on each and every single one of our minds. If it was, wouldn’t the world would be a much better place?!
