What to Do If You Want to Make Money From Home, But Don’t Know Where to Start
You want to make money from home. You’ve wanted it for a while, actually.
You’ve saved the Pinterest pins. You’ve Googled “work from home jobs for moms” at 11 p.m. You’ve listened to a podcast where someone made six figures selling hand-poured candles and thought, Good for her. I can’t even find matching socks.
And yet here you are. Still stuck before step one.
Here’s what I want you to know, mama: feeling stuck doesn’t mean you’re not cut out for this. It usually means you’re staring at the whole staircase when you only need to see the first step.
I didn’t have a grand plan either. I’m an accidental entrepreneur. Back in 2011, I moved from snowy Maine to sunny Florida, feeling very lucky that I got to keep my digital marketing job and work remotely. Six months later, the company decided they needed someone in-house. My hours got cut, and I was slowly being phased out.
So I had two choices: get another job, or figure out how to make it on my own. I did a little of both. I picked up several part-time jobs and freelanced on the side. By 2013, the freelance work had grown enough that I quit everything else and launched a business with my brother.
No vision board. No five-year plan. Just one practical step, then another.
That’s exactly what we’re going to do here. In this post, we’ll walk through:
- Why it’s so hard to know where to start
- How to find the skills and passions you can actually earn from
- How to test your idea before you pour time into it
- How to choose the right way to make money for your season of life
- The tiny first step you can take this week
Let’s get you unstuck.

Why It’s So Hard to Know Where to Start
Let’s be honest about what’s really going on.
You’re not stuck because you lack ideas. You’re stuck because you have too many ideas, or none that feel “good enough,” and zero time to sort through them. Add a baby on your hip and a toddler narrating his snack preferences, and decision-making becomes a competitive sport.
Here’s what usually keeps moms frozen:
- Too many options. Coaching, crafting, freelancing, selling online. Everything looks possible, so nothing feels clear.
- Fear of picking wrong. What if you spend months on something that flops?
- The “I’m not qualified” voice. It’s loud. It’s convincing. It’s also usually wrong.
- No time to think. Hard to plan a business when you can’t finish a cup of coffee while it’s still warm.
None of that means you can’t do this. It just means you need a simpler path, one that works in small pockets of time and doesn’t ask you to have it all figured out on day one.
Quick takeaway: Being stuck isn’t a sign you’re not capable. It’s a sign you’re trying to solve everything at once. Focus on just the next step.
Step 1: Start With What You Already Know
Good news: you don’t need to learn a brand-new skill to make money from home. Most moms are sitting on skills they’ve completely written off as “just stuff I do.”
Planning a week of meals for a family of five? That’s organization. Talking your sister through her resume? That’s coaching. Running the PTA group chat without losing your mind? Honestly, that’s management and diplomacy.
Grab your notes app and answer these:
- What did you do before kids? Your old job skills still count. Marketing, teaching, accounting, nursing, admin. All of it transfers.
- What do people ask you for help with? Friends don’t text you for advice at random. They come to you because you’re good at it.
- What do you lose track of time doing? That’s a clue about where your energy naturally goes.
- What could you talk about for 30 minutes with zero prep? That’s knowledge you probably undervalue.
Now look for overlap. The sweet spot is where something you enjoy meets something you’re good at and something other people need. That’s where a real business idea lives.
And if you’re thinking, But I’m not an expert, here’s a secret: you don’t need to be the world’s top expert. You just need to be a few steps ahead of the person you’re helping.
Quick takeaway: Your best business idea is probably built on skills you already have. List what you know, what people ask you for, and what you enjoy, then look for the overlap.
Step 2: Test Your Idea Before You Go All In
This is the step most people skip. And it’s the step that saves you the most time, money, and tears.
Before you build a website, design a logo, or order 400 custom tote bags, you need to know one thing: will someone actually pay for this?
You don’t find that out by thinking harder. You find it out by asking real people.
Ask yourself three quick questions:
- Does it solve a problem or make life better? People pay to fix a pain or feel a little joy. Which one does your idea offer?
- Is anyone else already selling something similar? Competition isn’t bad news. It’s proof that buyers exist.
- Can you describe your ideal customer in one sentence? “Everyone” doesn’t count. “Busy moms who want healthy dinners without meal-planning stress” does.
Then test it small:
- Offer your service to three people at a beta price.
- Make a small batch of your product and sell it to your circle.
- Post about your idea and see who leans in with questions.
- Ask a few people in your target audience what they’d pay for it.
The best sign of all? Someone hands you money before you’ve built the whole thing. That’s your green light.
Quick takeaway: Don’t build first and hope later. Test your idea with real people, at a small scale, before you invest serious time or money.

Step 3: Choose the Way You’ll Make Money
So you’ve got an idea, and people want it. Now comes the fun part: deciding how the money comes in.
There’s no single right answer. The best path is the one that fits your life right now, not the one that looks the most impressive on Instagram.
Here are the most common options for moms working from home:
- Offer a service. Freelance writing, virtual assistance, bookkeeping, design, coaching. Fast to start, no inventory, and you can begin with skills you already have. (This is how I started.)
- Sell physical products. Great for makers. Just plan for the time it takes to create, package, and ship.
- Create digital products. Templates, planners, guides, or courses you make once and sell again and again. A mom favorite, because it can earn while you’re at the pediatrician.
- Teach what you know. Workshops, group programs, or one-on-one lessons. If people already ask how you do it, they may pay to learn.
- Build an audience first. A blog, newsletter, or social account that earns through your own offers, affiliates, or sponsorships. Slower to pay off, but powerful long term.
When you choose, be realistic about your capacity. If you have 10 hours a week, don’t pick a path that needs 40. If shipping boxes sounds like your personal nightmare, skip physical products.
And remember, this isn’t a lifelong commitment. Plenty of moms start with a service to bring in income quickly, then add a digital product later. You can change lanes. You just need to pick one to start.
Quick takeaway: There’s more than one way to make money from home. Pick the path that fits your time, energy, and season today, knowing you can always adjust later.
Step 4: Take One Tiny First Step This Week
Here’s the part where most people stall again. They’ve done the thinking, and now they’re waiting to feel ready.
Spoiler: you won’t. Confidence shows up after you start, not before. It’s annoying, but it’s true.
So let’s make the first step so small it’s almost silly. “Start a business” is overwhelming. “Send one text” is not.
Pick just one of these for this week:
- Message three people who might need what you offer.
- Write down your offer in two sentences: what it is and who it helps.
- Post once about what you’re working on.
- Make one sample of your product.
- Block 30 minutes on your calendar and treat it like a dentist appointment.
That’s it. One small action. Then another next week.
When my hours got cut back in 2011, I didn’t launch a business overnight. I picked up freelance work, one client at a time, while juggling part-time jobs. Two years of small steps eventually added up to a real company. Small steps are how real businesses actually get built.
Your first version doesn’t need to be polished. It just needs to exist.
Quick takeaway: Waiting to feel ready keeps you stuck. Choose one tiny action this week, do it, and let momentum handle the rest.
Make It Fit Your Real Life
One more thing before you go, because it matters more than any strategy.
The goal isn’t just to make money from home. It’s to make money from home without building something that swallows your entire life. You started dreaming about this for flexibility. Don’t trade it away for a business that runs you ragged.
A few ground rules to protect that:
- Work in the time you actually have. Nap time, early mornings, or after bedtime. Even 30 focused minutes a day adds up fast.
- Keep it simple at first. One offer. One platform. One customer type.
- Put family priorities on the calendar first. Then build work around them, not the other way around.
- Give yourself grace. Some weeks you’ll crush it. Some weeks the whole house gets the stomach bug. Both are normal.
Quick takeaway: Build your business around your life, not your life around your business. Start small, protect your time, and keep your family first.
