3 Times You Shouldn’t Be Blogging

As a digital marketer, it’s my job to tell clients how great blogging is. I don’t do it to add more billable hours to a project, but because blogging really is fantastic.

In fact, I’ve talked a lot about how to create content – from how to be a better writer to learning how to write for the web to creating content your audience will love – when you’re having an especially difficult time writing.

That said, there are a few times when it’s really not the best time to be writing.

1. When you really can’t get over the writer’s block

Writer’s block happens to the best of us. It’s the nature of the beast.

But when you’re hit with writer’s block that you can’t shake, it’s really best to move on to something you’ll be more successful at for the moment.

That means planning out your posts so that you don’t have to be pressure prompted to write at the 11th hour. (Famous last words.)

(By the way, here are 5 ways to try to get over writer’s block, if you can!)

2. When you’re about to publish junk

I’m going to be honest here: I’ve published some posts over the years that I’m not 110% proud of. I don’t like to use the term “junk,” but they certainly weren’t some of my finest pieces.

I should’ve massaged them a bit more before hitting the “publish” button, but hey – you win some, you lose some.

I’ve gone back to many of these posts over the years and edited them until I felt they were the best they can be, but I really should have done that at the get-go.

So while you’re not going to be in love with each of your blogposts, make sure you’re at least proud to call them your own.

3. When your post doesn’t have a point

I find that when I sit down to write a blogpost, 9 times out of 10 I only have a general idea of what the post is going to be about.

What will typically happen is that as I start writing, a formation of a major point or subject matter will come to light. Then, I’ll end up whittling away at what doesn’t need to be included in order to focus on that single point.

A blogpost should be a very specific piece of content. If you find yourself rambling on about nothing or providing no substance to your readers, then put the post away until you’re ready to finish it.

And there you have it. When do you think you should hold off on writing or blogging? Share your thoughts and comments in the section below.
