The 3:1 Rule: Posting Salesy vs. Informational Blog Content
If you regularly create blog content for your business, stop right here and give yourself a pat on the back.
Now that we’re done with the good part, let’s talk about the kind of content you’re creating.
Are you focusing on relevant and informational content for your target market? Or do you tend to lean towards your company-focused or “salesy” posts?

If you tend to lead to the salesy posts, never fear…I have a rule for you.
For every 3 informational or resourceful blogposts you create, you can create one salesy post.
That means that for every 3 non-pushy, purely informational posts you’re creating to establish your business as the go-to expert, you can create one that is more self-serving for your company.
What are “salesy” posts?
First things first. What do I mean by “salesy” blogposts?
These more self-serving blogposts are going to be all about your company. Examples include:
- Press release posts: similar to press releases talking about company announcements, news, or product/service announcements
- Internal accolade posts: these may be congratulatory posts for employees or the company
- Product or service marketing: these posts are purely for selling or promoting your product(s) or service(s)
- Story or portfolio posts: these posts share great stories or the good work your company has done
Why should there be 3 resourceful posts for each 1 salesy post?
Your blog is meant to: provide helpful resources for your target audience, share relevant content your audience is searching for, and establish your company as the expert in your niche.
Your blog visitors often aren’t ready to hear about how great your company is…and if they are, they’ll navigate to your About section for that information. Instead, your audience is looking for helpful information that will answer the question(s) they have or solve their problem(s).
Talking about your company is important, but it certainly shouldn’t be what every blogpost is about. Stick to the 3:1 rule, and you’ll succeed with your blog!
