The new version of analytics – GA 4 – is here and I’ll be honest. I’m not loving it.
And I’m not the only one.
Google Analytics 4 provides very different reports than what we’re used to seeing with Universal Analytics and there’s a bit of a learning curve.
While GA 4 is now the default setup for your new Google Analytics properties, there is a way to set up the former Google Analytics Universal account.
How to set up a Universal Analytics Account
1. Create a new account
To add a new account, go to Google Analytics, then Admin > + Create Account on the top left hand side.
During account setup, add your account name and decide on your sharing settings.
2. Property setup
Here’s where the magic happens!
During the Property setup, enter your property name, time zone, and currency. Then click “Show advanced settings.”
You’ll see a section that says “Create a Universal Analytics property” and toggle the button on the righthand side “on.”
Then enter your URL and choose whether you’d like to create both a GA 4 and Universal Analytics property or just the Universal Analytics property.
3. Complete setup
Complete the setup of your new property and add the code on your website.
Now you’ll be getting Universal Analytics account information just like you could before.
