10 Things I’ve Learned in 10 Years of Business

This is a really special month.

January 2023 marks 10 YEARS in business for me 🥳

Just for a little perspective, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), approximately:

➡️ 20% of new businesses fail during the first two years
➡️ 45% fail during the first five years
➡️ 65% fail during the first 10 years

Ultimately, only 25% of new businesses make it to 15 years or more.

So, as you can see, 10 years is a big flipping deal…and we’re celebrating accordingly! 🎉

10 Things I’ve Learned in 10 Years of Business

1️⃣ Focus on the parts of your work that bring you joy

Life is way too short to do things that you’re not passionate about. Take stock early on about what parts of your job light you up…and which ones don’t.

2️⃣ Don’t worry about being anyone but exactly who you are

I don’t know about you…but I wasted far too much time trying to be someone I wasn’t. It was so important for me to appear professional and buttoned up, when the reality is, that’s not what my clients expect.

3️⃣ Follow the creativity, always

No matter what industry you’re in, there’s always creativity. The more creative you can be in your business, the better.

4️⃣ Never stop learning

Those who are convinced they already know everything are doomed to fail. Keep getting curious and learning about whatever you specialize in.

5️⃣ Start before you’re ready

You’re never going to be fully ready to get started…so don’t wait for an invitation. Instead, get started now.

6️⃣ Scale before you’re ready

Don’t be afraid to grow your team or find ways to scale before you’re ready either. After all, that’s exactly how you’ll grow as a business.

7️⃣ Be willing to grow, slow, and adjust at any time

Pivoting in your business is ultimately one of the most necessary skills you can ever acquire. Whether there’s a change in the market or your industry, it’s imperative that you can turn on a dime.

8️⃣ Business really is about the people; never forget that

Take care of your clients, coworkers, and colleagues and it will be one of the most valuable investments of your time and energy.

9️⃣ Find people who do part of your job better than you (and bring them on your team)

Not feeling a certain part of your job? Outsource it.

Find someone who can do it better? Outsource it.

🔟 Celebrate the wins; learn from the losses

Sometimes we miss the big celebrations in life because we’re so focused on moving onto the next big thing. Instead? Celebrate!

And when it comes to losses – know that they’ll happen. Pick yourself up quickly and learn from them!
