Writing for the Web: 5 Tips for Better Web Copywriting

Writing for the web isn’t like writing for an advertisement…or the newspaper…or a book. Writing for the web is an art unto itself.

When you create the content for your website, here are a few tips and tricks to keep in mind.

1. Focus on your customer

It goes without saying that your business website is built for your customer. That means building it and writing the content for them directly. So, when you write, be sure to use more “you’s” than “I’s.”

2. Optimize your content

Using Search Engine Optimization, make sure that you’re getting the best bang for your buck. In other words, incorporate the terms your customers are searching for within your pages.

3. Get your point across

With limited attention spans, people aren’t going to spend much time on your site unless you capture their attention. That means: say what you need to say in order to get your point across, without over doing it.

If your content starts to go too far over 5o0 words, consider creating an additional page. (The best rule of thumb is 300 – 500 words per page.)

4. Break up your content

Since we all have short attention spans online, it’s important to break up your content with plenty of headers, bold/italicized phrases, links, and numbered or bulleted lists.

5. Don’t forget a call-to-action

Last but not least, finish with what your users should do next. Whether it’s picking up the phone or filling out a contact form, help your users make the next step.
