What’s More Important Than High Search Engine Rankings?
If you’re a business owner, chances are you’ve stressed about your website’s search engine ranking at some point.
Why do entrepreneurs stress about ranking #1 on Google? 🤔
You’re 10X more likely to get clicks from a #1 result vs. a #10 search engine result.
Backlinko
Because you are ten times more likely to get clicks with a # 1 result than a # 10 result! 😱
But here’s the thing a lot of entrepreneurs miss: you need to rank for the right keywords, not just any ol’ keywords.

So consider: what’s the intent of each page on your website? Is it to…
➡️ Inform?
➡️ Engage?
➡️ Convert signups?
➡️ Sell?
You’re constantly moving your site visitors down the sales funnel…but each page and each piece of content has a different goal. (Hint: it’s not always to sell.)
Your copy – and your keywords – need to follow suit.
Think about the intention behind the keywords you’re ranking for (or want to rank for) and you’ll hit an even better goal than # 1 rankings: more sales and happy customers.
What’s the intent of each website page?
Is it to sell a product?
Drive traffic to your blog?
Get people to sign up for your newsletter?
Once you know the intent of each page, you can start targeting keywords that reflect that intent. So, if you want people to buy a product from your website, you’ll want to target keywords that indicate buying intent, like “buy” or “purchase.”
Quality over quantity
Ranking for the right keywords is much more important than simply ranking high in the search results.
After all, what good is it to be #1 for a keyword that no one is searching for? Not only will you not get any clicks (and thus no sales), but you’ll also end up wasting a lot of time and money trying to rank for keywords that just aren’t worth it.
The moral of the story? When it comes to SEO, quality trumps quantity every time.
So what’s more important than high search engine rankings? Targeting the right keywords.
If you want your website to actually drive traffic and sales, focus on quality over quantity when it comes to the keywords you’re targeting. A few well-chosen keywords will do more for your business than a million irrelevant ones.
