7 SEO Blogging Mistakes that Kill Your Traffic

Are you trying to build traffic for your blog?

You’re probably familiar with the term “content marketing” — creating valuable content on your site or blog in order to attract visitors and drive traffic.

But did you know that there are seven common mistakes you should avoid when writing content?

To gain quality traffic from Google to your blog, it’s critical to understand how search engines work so you can optimize your content effectively. Here are seven common SEO mistakes that will kill your traffic.

7 SEO Blogging Mistakes that Kill Your Traffic

1. YOU’RE NOT WRITING ABOUT TOPICS PEOPLE ARE SEARCHING FOR

Writing off the cuff or before you do any keyword research? Think again.

If you write about something your audience isn’t searching for, there is one simple truth: your post won’t be found online.

For instance, if you keep trying to create content around “cultivation tips” or “floriculture tips,” but your people are actually searching for “gardening tips,” you’re fighting an uphill battle.

Sidenote: we see this a lot with clients in technical fields; be sure to use the layman term, if that’s what your audience uses.

2. YOU’RE NOT WRITING ENOUGH CONSISTENT, QUALITY CONTENT

Quality, consistent content is how your blogposts will rank well in the search engines long-term. Create posts on a regular basis (at least once a week, if possible) with at least 500 words per post.

3. YOU’RE NOT TESTING TITLES

If you’re not testing different blogpost titles, then you’re leaving traffic on the table. In fact, we’ve seen this is one of the easiest ways to improve your traffic and conversion rates.

Try experimenting with different types of titles: negative, numbered list, experience-based, and so on.

Your blogpost titles can help you get them.

Your blogpost title is about 50% of your battle when it comes to both optimizing your blogpost and enticing searchers to click on it.

That’s the power of the title.

4. YOU’RE USING TOO MANY KEYWORDS

Another mistake that kills search engine traffic is using too many keywords. It’s easy to think that more keywords will help your site rank higher, but in reality, it just makes things worse.

Overusing keywords is called “keyword stuffing” and is a big issue both for usability and readability, as well as search engine rankings. In short, content that stuffs keywords simply isn’t quality content.

5. YOU’RE NOT STRUCTURING YOUR POSTS FOR USABILITY

Both your website navigation and your content itself need to make sense for the most amount of readers.

If you’re not sure how to structure your pages, start with these three steps:

1) Write out what you want to say;
2) Make sure each paragraph has a clear purpose; and
3) Keep paragraphs short.

6. YOU’RE NOT INCLUDING CALLS-TO-ACTION

In addition to optimizing your blogposts, you should also make sure that you include calls-to-action (CTAs) on each page.

CTAs are links or buttons that lead people to another part of your site or to an external resource. In essence, calls-to-action help direct people to the next best step or resource (and they help you improve traffic and, ultimately, conversions).

7. YOU’RE NOT BUILDING LINKS

Another one of the biggest mistakes people make with blogging is not building links. The more relevant incoming links to your blog, the better you’ll ultimately rank.

Consider implementing guest blogging in your blogging practice to increase incoming links. Additionally, you can check out a resource like HARO to get great expert opportunities from reputable websites and online magazines.
